Healthy Families in the 21st Century: How Genetics and Geneology Can Work for You.
Speaker is Adele Schneider, MD, FACMG
Lecture is on Monday August 3rd from 9:45 AM - 11:00AM

The CDC, NIH and Hadassah are actively encouraging the public to use their family history tools to track medical conditions in their families that might have a genetic component.

With advances in genetics, the use of the family history in conjunction with a genetics risk assessment can provide information about specific testing for genes known to predispose to certain conditions. Genetic counseling can offer insights into the value of the genetic testing.

This session will discuss how you can use your family tree and new advances in genetics to maximize the preventive health opportunities for you and your family.

Where Did That Come From? Understanding the Inheritance Patterns of
Common Genetic Traits and diseases.
Speaker is Faye Shapiro, MS, CGC
Lecture is on Monday, August 3rd from 11:15 PM -12:30 PM

It is our genetic code that gives our bodies its instructions for growth and development and determines our physical traits and diseases. Some of these traits and diseases are passed directly from parent to child, while others require a combination of genes from both parents. Even others are passed through the X chromosome of females.

This session will give examples of different inheritance patterns, and explain how genetic counseling can help people explore different traits and diseases in their families and how to trace them backwards and forward to previous and future generations.
