Philadephia Victor Center Screens at University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA
Monday, April 6th at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA
The Victor Center for Jewish Genetic Diseases hosted its eighth screening at the University of Pennsylvania’s Steinhardt Hall Hillel on Monday, April 6th. The screening was made possible by funding from the Mirowski Family Foundation and the Nursing Alumni Association of Albert Einstein Medical Center.
Genetic counselors from Albert Einstein Medical Center and students from Arcadia University volunteered their time to provide each participant with genetic counseling prior to the phlebotomy. A hallmark of the Victor Center programs is the focus on education, which was very evident by the attention and time these counseling volunteers spent with each student.
Each of the 112 students was screened for a panel of nine diseases which are more prevalent in those of Ashkenazi descent. One in five Ashkenazi Jews is a carrier of a mutation in a gene for one of these nine Jewish genetic diseases. This screening is a great opportunity for these students to receive a service for free that could cost thousands.
University of Pennsylvania students were available throughout the day to help register people their peers, and assist the screening staff in any way needed. The Victor Center is looking forward to again visiting University City to screen at Drexel University in May! Visit www.victorcenters.org for details.
